The International Travel Fellowships, a joint program of the World Health Organization (WHO), Department of Mental
Health and Substance Abuse (http://www.who.int/substance_abuse/en/ ) and the International Society for Addiction
Medicine (ISAM) is encouraging applications for the 2008 International Travel Fellowships
Fellowships are announced on the ISAM webpages and selected addiction field journals. Awards will support
participation of young (under 45 years preferred) addiction specialists from eligible countries* to attend the
ISAM Annual Scientific Meeting. This is to be held November 17-20, 2008 in Cape Town, South Africa (
see http://www.isamweb.org or
www.isam2008.com ). The amount of the award varies and covers for reasonable travel,
accommodation as well as registration fees for the conference. Successful applicants must show proof of medical/travel insurance.
Deadline to receive letter of interest: July 1, 2008
Deadline for submitted documentation: August 31, 2008
Eligibility Criteria:
(1) Affiliated with organizations with the capability and a history of conducting addiction research, teaching and /or treatment;
(2) Involved in addiction research, and/or clinical and teaching activities in the area of addictions;
(3) Showing promise of developing future research;
(4) Living and working outside the high-income countries at the time of application and travel. Preference is given to applicants from Category C & D countries according to the World Bank classification, see www.worldbank.org
(5) Presenting an abstract at the ISAM meeting (oral presentation at Fellowship session)
(6) Having sufficient knowledge of the language to present in English;
(7) Fellows may not have received travel support from WHO or ISAM in the past year.
Application must include
(1) Abstract: “objectives, methods, results and conclusions” model is expected
(2) Short curriculum vitae including list of publications (max two pages)
(3) Two letters of reference (in English) stating (1) benefits of the applicant to his/her further research and/or clinical practice or teaching, and (2) potential contribution to home country in case of attending the meeting. ISAM members including Board members or members of the WHO Regions are suitable to write a reference unless part of the Selection Committee.
(4) Estimation of travel costs.
Selection Criteria: Max 29 points; Min requirement 15 points
(a) CV (max 8 pts – 4 max/part): affiliations to addiction related organizations, training research or teaching in addiction, age, potential future research
(b) Quality of Abstract (max 12 pts - 3 max/part): Objectives, methods, results, conclusions
(c) Potential contribution to home country (max 3 pts): 1: Unsure/low; 2: Moderate; 3: High
(d) Potential for ISAM growth (max 3 pts): 1: Unsure/low; 2: Moderate; 3: High (ISAM member)
(e) Travel Costs (max 3 pts): 3: Low; 2: Moderate; 1: High
Composition of the Selection Committee: 3 core and 3 regional representatives
WHO – (1) HQ (ex-officio) Dr. Poznyak) and (2) WHO Regional rep
ISAM – (1) Head Office (ex-officio) Dr. el-Guebaly and (2) core member Dr. H. Alho for a term of 3 years renewable once
Local Organizing Committee – (1) LOC Committee Chair and (2) other LOC member
Insurance
Participants are advised to arrange adequate cover for travel and health insurance before departing from their home
country. The organizers can accept to liability for personal injuries or for loss or damage to property belonging to
meeting participants, either during or as a result of the vent.
Application procedure
Application deadline is announced on the ISAM webpages and select addiction field journals. The cover page of the
application with contact information must be faxed to the ISAM Head Office 1-403 944-2056, and the other documentation
can be sent via email to office@isamweb.com. Incomplete or delayed applications will not be considered. Applications
should include a fax number and email address if available.
Each Annual Meeting Local Organizing Committee will coordinate registration and lodging after the awards are announced
and may help with travel arrangements if necessary.
